Robotic Surgery

Robotic surgery is a leading-edge technology that provides surgeons with superior visualization, enhanced dexterity, greater precision, and ergonomic comfort that allows them to perform complex procedures using tiny incisions.

For patients, this means:

  • Less pain
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Minimal scarring
  • Faster return to an active lifestyle

Our surgeons use robotic platforms to provide more minimally invasive options for cardiac, colon and rectal, general, gynecologic, thoracic, and urologic procedures.

Our Growing Robotics Program

Since introducing robotic surgery to our patients in 2008, our specially trained team has grown and expanded the use of the da Vinci® Surgical System. In 2019, we added a second system, the da Vinci Xi, to accommodate the increasing demand for the enhanced capabilities of robot-assisted surgery. The hospital recently introduced a robotic-assisted platform for minimally invasive biopsy in the lung, the Ion Endoluminal System.

Robotics-Assisted Versus Laparoscopic Surgery

Both traditional laparoscopic and robotic surgery are minimally invasive, using small incisions and a tiny camera. With laparoscopy, the surgeon stands over the patient, operating with rigid, stick-like instruments. Robotic technology expands on what surgeons can do laparoscopically. The robotic platform allows the surgeon to manipulate tissue and place sutures (stitches) in areas that straight-stick laparoscopic instruments cannot reach. Robotic-assisted procedures offered by specially-trained surgeons include:

Cardiac

  • Atrial fibrillation ablation
  • Minimally Invasive Direct Coronary Artery Bypass (MIDCAB)
  • Intracardiac Tumor (Atrial Myxoma and Fibroelastoma) Resection
  • Left atrial appendage exclusion
  • Mitral valve repair
  • Tricuspid valve repair

Colorectal

  • Colon resection (colectomy)
  • Diverticulitis
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis)
  • More complex and right colectomy for cancer and diverticulitis
  • Rectal prolapse
  • Rectal resection
  • Removal of cancerous or benign tumors, polyps, and lesions

General Surgery

  • Hernia repair (including complex and larger hernias)
  • Cholecystectomy (gall bladder removal)

Gynecology

  • Endometriosis
  • Hysterectomy
  • Myomectomy (removal of uterine fibroids)
  • Pelvic adhesions
  • Pre-pregnancy cerclage
  • Prolapse

Thoracic

  • Bilobectomy
  • Lobectomy
  • Lung cancer
  • Lymph node dissection
  • Mediastinal mass resection
  • Segmentectomy
  • Thymectomy
  • Wedge resections

Urology

  • Bladder resection
  • Nephrectomy (kidneys)
  • Prostatectomy (prostate)
